The first notions that usually come to mind when considering garbage, waste and deterioration are generally negative, when not outright nauseating. We are aware of the physical and chemical processes of the matter around us, beginning with the cycles of nature itself, including industrial processes, technical constructions and manufactured consumer items, and ending with the very materiality of the human being as a living organism. This crisscrossing of elements and activities-which, after all, is what makes the human being civilized and cultural, negotiating and struggling to domesticate and exploit the landscape and the ecosystem, the planet, in short-generates endless reactions, overpopulation and overproduction, upsets and imbalances, and therefore waste, before which we often do not know how to react or that, metaphorically, but also in the practical reality, we end up sweeping under the rug and looking the other way.

The visual arts look many different ways, and although they usually attract many views because of their connotations of beauty, taste, aesthetics, etc., the multiple and relational vision of contemporary artists has also wanted and known how to look under the rug at the theme of garbage and waste. In fact, throughout the 20th century, since the first collages and assemblages with the refuse and found objects of cubism, Dadaism and surrealism, to the practices of conceptual art, Nouveau Réalisme, Arte Povera, land art, and other movements from the 1960s and 70s, which focused on the material, the organic and the conflicts between what is natural and what is produced, the truth is that the idea of waste is not at all strange to the art world.

Inherent to the concept of waste, over time the term recycling has also appeared, and it has become increasingly mainstream since the energy crisis of 1973. Since then, recycling has turned into a catchphrase we apply both to the new cycles of use and reuse waste affords us after it has been separated and reprocessed, and to the idea that an artist has to recycle his or her oeuvre and style in order to more effectively meet the demands for novelty that seem to be at the very root of artistic activity, the exhibition circuit and the market.

Waste and recycling are, then, the two concepts around which this exhibition is conceived. These two terms to be addressed through the selection of works of a number of of artists who sometimes present us with ingenious visual results (for example, Vik Muniz Chus García-Fraile and Diet Wiegman); whereas others play with spectacle and provocation, yet with undercurrents pointing to the excesses of consumer society (in the case of Chris Jordan and Ester Partegàs); still others elicit protest against environmental degradation, yet they do so deploying a combination of audacity, alienation and poetics (in the case of Basurama, Donna Conlon, Mark Dion and Regina José Galindo).

Simon Starling poursuit un travail centré sur les transformations, les métamorphoses, créant de nouvelles circulations, du matériau à l'objet et de la substance à la forme, ou encore d'un lieu à l'autre. Ses oeuvres prennent forme au sein d'un contexte social, politique et géographique. Déplacées et transformées par l'artiste, elles se révèlent dans leur dimension poétique. 

Simon Starling bouscule la réalité et nous invite à porter un autre regard sur les choses qui nous entourent.

Pour décrypter ces oeuvres, sep t « Visites Inventées » sont proposées à tous le dimanche à 16h. Guidés par des « experts » en compagnie d'un conférencier du musée, les visiteurs prennent pour point de départ chacune des six installations de l'exposition.

RETHINK - Contemporary Art & Climate Change in Copenhagen, Denmark

INTERNATIONAL ART EXHIBITION GIVING NEW PERSPECTIVES ON COP15 CLIMATE SUMMIT IN COPENHAGEN

The National Gallery of Denmark, Den Frie Centre of Contemporary Art, Nikolaj Copenhagen Contemporary Art Center, and the Alexandra Institute join forces in an international contemporary art exhibition that puts a new perspective on the climate debate.

On 31 October the international art exhibition "RETHINK - Contemporary Art & Climate Change" opens in Copenhagen, Denmark, with great ambitions in both size and scope. While politicians will gather at the UN Climate Change Conference, 26 trendsetting Nordic and international artists display their work at some of Denmark's finest art institutions, creating new ways for the public and politicians to grasp the complicated climate issues.

RETHINK is an exhibition with works created by Nordic and International contemporary artist who in different ways relate to the intersection between art, culture and climate change. The exhibition will present works by artists Tomas Saraceno (AR), Henrik Håkansson (SE), The Icelandic Love Corporation (IS), Superflex (DK), Bright Ugochukwu Eke (NG), Olafur Eliasson (IS/DK), and many others.

RETHINK is nominated the "Nordic Exhibition of the Year 2009-2010" by the Nordic Culture Fund and will tour several cities in the Nordic countries in 2010. In addition, the exhibition is part of the official culture programme for the United Nations Climate Change Conference COP15 that will take place in Copenhagen from December 7th to 18th.

Parution de L'Esthétique Verte, de Loïc Fel,
premier ouvrage sur l'influence culturelle et artistique de l'écologie


Paris le 22 oct 2009 L’écologie provoque un bouleversement culturel qui se déploie jusque dans l’expérience esthétique. Loïc Fel, philosophe et directeur du développement durable, analyse pour la première fois cette mutation en cours.

L’écologie en tant que science porte en elle une révolution culturelle : la fin de la perception de la nature comme un environnement, un agrégat d’objets posés côte à côte, pour l’aborder comme un système : un écosystème. Accélérée par les enjeux du réchauffement climatique et l’érosion de la biodiversité, l’écologie met fin de façon brutale à l’idée de représentation de la nature, source originelle de l’art durant des millénaires, pour y substituer une approche de « présentation » de la nature, expliquant son fonctionnement, et révélant ainsi l’ampleur de l’impact des activités humaines sur le vivant.
L’art, les media, la publicité, la sensibilité individuelle intègrent aujourd’hui cette dimension « verte » encore rarement analysée. C’est l’histoire de ce changement culturel que L’esthétique verte explicite.

La nouvelle approche « eco-systémique » inspire et déclenche des figures esthétiques nouvelles. Artistes, urbanistes, designers relient aujourd’hui esthétique et écologie par des réalisations concrètes : coulées vertes, installations éphémères en matériaux naturels, esthétisation directe des organismes vivants, œuvres in situ dans les espaces naturels, etc.
Rassemblées sous la notion d’esthétique verte, ces expériences se rattachent au champ du savoir, de la technique et de l’aménagement du territoire.

L’esthétique entame une mutation : cessant d’être décorellée du rapport quotidien au monde, elle traduit autant qu’elle accompagne le changement culturel en cours : celui de l’écologie.

L’auteur 
Loïc Fel, 28 ans, est philosophe, responsable du développement durable dans une grande agence de publicité. Docteur en philosophie de l’Université de Paris-1-Panthéon-Sorbonne, L. Fel est co-fondateur de l’association COAL, la coalition pour l’art et le développement durable (www.projetcoal.fr). Il est également l’organisateur du colloque « écologie : science, art et société » en Sorbonne (2007) et du séminaire philosophie des sciences du paysage de l’Institut d’Histoire et de Philosophie des Science (2008-2009).
